If you have been charged with a misdemeanor you will want an experienced attorney in court with you. While most misdemeanors carry a sentence of up to 1 year in jail, there are other misdemeanors which carry up to 6 months or less in jail. These cases are heard in District Court and can be transferred to Superior Court after a sentence is imposed upon appeal or within 10 days of arraignment by motion. There are no jury trials in District Court.
