The following are the five types of photos you should be taking after a car accident:
- The entire scene – After you ensure the safety of everyone involved in the accident and the police are called, you should take wide-angle photos of the entire accident scene. These pictures offer a general depiction of how the vehicles appear in relation to the road and the surrounding area.
- The vehicles involved – Take photos of the vehicles involved in the crash. You should take close-ups of the damaged areas of each vehicle, the rest of the exterior, the interior, and any debris from the cars on the road. It is important to take multiple photos at different angles, since you may discover something new after taking a closer look at each of the pictures.
- The people involved, including witnesses – Document the physical conditions and injuries of those involved in the accident. Identify any individuals who can provide eyewitness testimonies of the accident.
- The road – take focused photos of the road that show the condition of the road and any skid marks that may be present. The length and width of skid marks can identify which driver attempted to slam on his or her brakes before impact and the direction a car was going before and after braking. Additionally, it will show the position of the vehicle before it started braking and how far it was from the other vehicle before the collision.
- The traffic signs – These photos help show whether or not someone failed to obey a traffic sign. Be sure to take pictures of any lights, stop or yield signs, and street markings.
