Three Safety Tips for Safe Homes

April Picozzi • April 27, 2025

It's June, and that means National Safety Month is in full swing! The National Safety Council works hard each year to spread public awareness about safety concerns at home and in the community. Your home is meant to be your sanctuary, but that doesn't mean it's void of dangers. In recognition of National Safety Month, we would like to offer you a few helpful tips to make your home safe!

TIP #1: BE CAREFUL WITH HOUSEHOLD POISONS

Accidental poisoning and prescription overdosing are currently the leading cause of unintentional death in the United States. Adults and children are being overprescribed medication and misusing it. Opioid addiction alone causes 52 deaths a day. Medication misuse also includes over-the-counter treatments for sleeping aids and colds. Be aware of your drug intake and get medical aid if you need it.

In addition, many dangerous cleaning chemicals and pesticide products are stored in your house. According to the National Safety Council, more than 300 children are poisoned by household products each day. Keep these products safely stored where children can't reach them.

Household products to be wary of:

  • Floor polish
  • Home furnishing and building materials
  • Laundry packets
  • Toilet and drain cleaners
  • Glass cleaners

TIP #2: PREVENT FALLING OPPORTUNITIES

Falling is an unfortunate part of life, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't try to prevent an accident. A bad fall can lead to drastic lifestyle changes and even death. The best way to prevent a fall at home is to make your house safer.

Prevent falls at home by:

  • Clearing clutter that can be tripped on
  • Arranging furniture to create walking room
  • Ensuring your home has good lighting
  • Cleaning spills immediately

TIP #3: BE DILIGENT TO AVOID DROWNING

With the advent of summer break, playing in the pool is going to be a popular pastime. Drowning isn't just a concern for children, it can happen to teenagers and adults as well. Make sure to keep safety precautions in mind if you're planning on swimming this summer.

Safety precautions when swimming at home:

  • Never swim alone
  • Don't roughhouse with others
  • Stay hydrated
  • Don't drink alcohol
  • Have first aid available
  • Never leave children alone
